For geocaching, would Magellan Maestro 3225 work?

We want a unit that could be used for both geocaching and car travel. We will not be doing a lot of either (or don't think so...)

Thanks for any help!

  1. Geocaching is very addictive! I have a lot of fun with this sport.

The model you have mentioned is not suitable for two main reasons:

    - It is not portable. You need a model that can be carried by hand, using battery power. The model you mention is for car navigation use only.

    - It does not allow lat/long waypoint entry which is essential for geocaching.

Having a model that does both geocaching type work and car navigation is a tough call. You need to look at models that are designed for hiking and portable use and forget those car nav models.  OR, you could simply buy a basic model for hiking/geocaching and a simple one for car navigation; they're cheap enough that the collective cost might be equal to an advanced GPS model that would do both.

One model that does do both well enough (and reasonably economically) is the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx; it is a nice portable GPS unit with a lot of features, plus it can be used in the car to provide Turn by Turn navigation.  You will likely also want to use a mobile mount in the car for this to keep the unit steady  for viewing (usually an extra purchase).  This unit has a nice color display and everything you would need for geocaching.
