  1. most of the time it is 30 days and then you need to apply for

Cobra which is expensive.  Your prior employeer should have given you the Cobra packet.  Call up HR and they may send it to you again.

I am a hiring manager in socal and what are you looking for.  I run a distribution center

  2. Like they mentioned above, your employer should have offered you COBRA at the end of your employment.

If you elected COBRA, you should be able to remain on COBRA for 24 months if you worked for an employer who employed more than 25 people.  If your employer was a small employer, employing less than 25 people, you would only be eligible for state continuation for 9 months.

Either way it is up to the employer to get you the paperwork to sign up right away.  If they didn't offer it to you, you can notify them that you want to elect it and if they can't show proof of notification they would have to allow you to go on.

  3. Yes only 30 days.  Most of the time you will receive a termination of benefits notice.  You should contact COBRA right away.

  4. Once you terminated your employer, your coverage would have also terminated either that day or sometime thereafter up to the end of the month that you terminated. This is determined by your employer and would have been delineated by them when you were hired.

If you had the coverage through an employer, they have 30 days to notify your plan about your termination. The plan has 14 days after that to notify you of the COBRA. Then you will have 60 days after the written notice is sent to elect or decline COBRA. This timeline would still entitle you to COBRA so contact your employer ASAP to get the paperwork completed or you will not have an opportunity to continue the coverage through COBRA. You will also have to pay the entire premium (which includes the portion that your employer paid) up to 102% of the premium (2% covers administrative costs for the carrier).
