I'm a preschool teacher of the 2 1/2 yr old class and would like to know what parents want their kids to know before the age of 3. This will help me in my guidelines and curriculum of my classroom. Thanks for your help.

  1. I would like my son to know how to tie his shoes, the potty, and of course his numbers and colors!!!

  2. To be able to communicate with others, identify shapes, know colors and count at least to five

  3. At this age I would not want my child to be focusing just on cognitive skills and learning things by age 3.  I think it is important for children to learn through play at this age...leave a lot of time in your plans for open ended child directed play.  Social skills ( function in a group, conflict resolution, communicating with others) are also important.

Just HAVE FUN and the rest will come!

  4. I would like them to be able to express theirselves without whining, hitting, biting, or throwing themselves down in a tantrum. I would also like them to listen the first time we say no. And if you can do this please tell me where you work. I will pay top dollar.

  5. I think this is totally child-dependent (sorry--not what you wanted, right?!). I was pretty excited when my then-2yo potty trained, so she could enter a 3yo program that required potty skills. But some kids just aren't ready for that. I have also fallen prey to the my-kid-is-bright-do-everything-she-can-d... problem with my older one. In retrospect, I should have been happy with the "works and plays well with others" baseline. Kids that can ask for what they need and tell you how they feel/are responding will get along much better when they get to older levels because they are accustomed to communicating with their voices rather than with their fists (feet, teeth, whatever).

If a kid needs a bit more attention, skills such as making friends, lining up, and taking turns are essential. For brighter ones, you can teach rote counting, letters (and even letter sounds and reading if a kid is ready), colors, shapes, basic sorting, that kind of stuff. I loved to do songs with my kids when they were 2--anything they could repeat back to me was hilarious for both of us.

Also, I wouldn't worry about fine motor skills (obviously). Large muscle skills, such as galloping, running, hopping (if they can do it), throwing a ball, swinging, and so on also help to build body awareness, proprioception and self-confidence.

Good luck--it sounds like you really care about your kids and recognize that your customers are both small (the kids) and large (their parents).
