I have been wanting to play the guitar for a long *** time ever since i really got into rock and metal which was around 5-6th grade. I bought a guitar like a dumb *** in 6th grade thinking i would learn how to play right away but eventually i didn't want to do it b/c i did not have enough money. Years have gone by now I'm 17 now i do want to go out and get a instructor or go to a group. But i need a place that is not expensive and that can really teach you to play for beginners and eventually teach you how to shred big time. Please anyone from New York that have any ideas please tell me. I'm desperate to start learning asap. I cant stand hearing great music from classic metal and rock songs knowing that i could have learned how to play the guitar allready.

  1. I agree with the previous poster. Universities are the best for this. Grad students teach lessons for decent prices and you know they're vetted.

But, as a fellow guitar player, I will say ability is gain by discipline. You can get the same instruction out of a good beginner's book bought at Borders - it's all about setting your practice schedule and practicing, practicing, and practicing.

Everything can be achieved with books and the net. There are always all sorts of levels of practice routines documented.

Like anything requiring good skill, time and practice is necessary - it is not always fun. Additionally, hand size is an issue. Go to a piano key board, if you can't stretch one hand's finger the length of at least 9 keys, you stand little physical chance of becoming a shredder.

  2. Check the ads posted at manhattan school of music. Or the village voice which is read by many musicians.

with craigslist you run more of a risk but it may be worth while.

Sometimes on lamp posts or bus shelters around columbia university or nyu
