I recently moved into the area with my 4 and 5 year old. In Sept I will be enrolling them into public school and was interested to know other than the internet reviews I've found online, which are the best public schools in the area or are there any resources I may go to do more research. I work full time and my schedule will not permit to visit every school in the area. Your positive input is greatly appreciated.

  1. Unfortunately in NYC you dont pick which school your child will attend, you must put them in their "zone" school.  This is the school designated to service students ina  specific neighborhood.  The only way to have your child attend a different school is if he/she has special needs and that school doesn't provide the needed services.  In that case they would tell you which is the closest school that does.  You need to contact your local region, or walk into the closest school, tell them where you live and they will tell you which is your "zone"school.  Registration occurs now in the spring for next fall.  Do not miss this, as kindergarten is not mandated and your child can be left out of school next year or bussed to a far away school.

One other thing is a variance, which allows you to put your child in a school near your job, and although they exist, they are almost never granted, due to overcrowding issues throughout the city.  Good luck!
