For people that don't support offshore drilling, what if there is a war?

This could go for other subjects too, but what if there is war and the US is too dependent on other countries? What will we do if we can't even power our ships and power jets? For national security we must drill for oil, if we rely too much on other countries it could easily come back to bite us.

  1. A good reason for not sucking up new reserves for your over sized SUVs is to be oil independent when foreign reserves run dry.  It's better to pay now for foreign gas than later.

However, your oil reserves aren't owned by you Americans, they are owned by Big Oil and they will sell on the world market unless the US would move to nationalize their oil.  That'll never happen so you'll never be energy independent.

I don't think oil will be a worry once world war three starts even though it may become the cause.

  2. If there is a war we can ration gas to supply the army until our remaining reserves can be tapped.

If we drill out our reserves now, they will be burned up by commuters in a few years.  When your hypothetical war starts, they won't be there at all.

  3. If it happens, World War III will be nuclear.  It won't last long.  It'll be over in just a couple of minutes.  Then we won't need oil anymore.

  4. Lets Drill !!! I agree. :-) This is America we should be energy independent.  It is in the best interest of our national security.  Plus the transfer of wealth is CrAzY.  We have to use all of the above though(wind, solar, clean coal, nuclear, hydro) not just oil.

  5. There is a war.

  6. You're right that we need to be more energy independent, no argument there.  Where I disagree with you is on how we achieve that goal.

Instead of drilling offshore for oil -- which won't produce results for 10 years, meets only a tiny percentage of our needs, is a finite resource and poses unnecessary environmental risks, I say we focus on conserving energy (even McCain acknowledged that Obama's comment about doing better with maintaining appropriate tire pressure in our cars could save almost as much oil as drilling could produce) and developing clean, renewable, domestic energy sources - wind, wave, solar and bio-power.

An added benefit of developing those new sources is that it'll create domestic jobs and exportable products.  Where am I wrong?

  7. Here is what you lack to understand.

Big Oil has proven sites leased out now - THAT THEY REFUSE TO DRILL. Thats right. Millions of acres of land they have leased the title to from the federal government.  These sites are sitting idle.

Next, there are still over 68,000,000 drillable acres of federal land and offshore sites available for private companies to drill.

Big Oil is creating a distraction! They go on these Public Relations Campaigns to blame liberals, democrats and environmentalist. They do this to keep the average American off their backs.

    Recap

    - big oil has proven oil sites sitting idle

    - big oil won't even lease the 68,000,000 acres of drillable land and offshore sites available (more land than the size of Colorado).

    - big oil is making record profits.
