Question:

For people who go to buffets and order from the made-to-order omelet station?

I work at a station like this, and almost once a week, a person will come over, order an omelet or an egg, then stand there for a few seconds, then ask, "Do I have to tell you what I want in it?"

I am not being a smartpants right now; I really want to know: How else can I make your food if you don't tell me? I know I am not allowed to ask this of guests at my job, but I am really curious. If it were an isolated occurrence, I would think, that person just isn't that bright. But it happens enough that maybe people know something I don't know.

How can you get your food without telling the cook what you want?

  1. They probably say that because they are assuming since it is a buffet there is only ONE kind of omlette and they are just checking to see if they can choose.    Maybe you just need to listen carefully  instead of being insulted by stupidity

  2. When someone orders an omelet, it maybe just easier to ask:  "What fillings would you like in your omelet?"  This will save you time and aggravation.

  3. Next time he askes, say "No, I know"

And make him a cornflake omelette.

  4. I know it's can be a little difficult to deal with customers in the front of the house if you're used to being a BOH cook, but this can all be easily avoided, by just saying:

"Hey, what can I get for you?"

    "An omelette"

"Great! What fillings would you like in that omelette?"

that will save everyone a lot of time, awkwardness, and frustrations!
