  1. If he has a private plate, he'll probably want to keep it. He will apply to the DVLA and will get his private number removed from the car. He will get a new registration number (often the number that was on the car before it had a private plate put on it, but not always). Make sure that the number plates on the car and the registration number on the V5C registration document, tax disc and MOT are all the same.

This'll sometimes take a few weeks until it is all sorted out. I wouldn't attempt to but the car until this is all done as you could end up with missing documents.

If he sells you the car with the private plate on it and you transfer the car into your name (by filling in the registration document and sending it away) then the private plate is yours.

  2. He's just saying that he wants to keep his plate and that it would not be part of the deal, which is fair enough.  He can't complete a sale until that has been done or the plate would transfer ownership with the car.  Ask what the original plate was - the chances are the DVLA will reissue that.  He will either transfer it to a new vehicle (easier) or he has to pay to keep it on retention.

  3. Yes, he will take his private plates off as they belong to him. You have to get the original document I think, my hubby would know but he's at work

  4. you need to get a new registration plate

becouse he will take the plates of

    good luck

  5. You need to ask the seller in the morning if the price he is selling for includes the private plate, and if not, or you do not want the car with a private plate, you need to send the log book to the DVLA who will then return the log book with the original registered plate, which will take about 2 weeks.

You can still buy the car with the private plate, and send the log book on after purchase.

If the seller wants to keep the plate however, he really needs to sort this out before selling the car.

  6. He is obviously going to take his cherished plate off bcos he probs payed good money for it. Praps he doesn't have the original plate? :S

    I

  7. dont know what country your in, but in ireland you can have green plates for inside the car that cover you for tax, like a trade car.

otherwise he should not be able to reuse the car reg plates because they are specific to that car, if HE wants to reuse that reg he has to pay for it.

The reg is like the steering wheel, it just comes with the car

    its not a bloody extra

  8. As per Lorne's answer, he has private plates that he wants to keep. This means that he'll contact the DVLA, have his plates put 'on retention' and have either the original ones from the car, or other plates of the correct age reinstated by the DVLA.

It's not a problem, but make sure the plates are changed & you have the correct paperwork prior to purchase, as he'll also need to change the tax disc to match the new plate.

  9. would have been nice if you would have typed this in english instead of telephone text. Some of us old people really don't understand this modern language. but that's for the points

  10. If he wants to take the plate off the car he will have to re-register it with probably the original number, that would have been issued with the car, which ever year it was first registered. You should not have to do anything about the plate as the present owner will have to own the next vehicle he wants to put it on.
