The same as they do if you go bankrupt. If so, why do they do that in either case?

  1. Yes they do.

Because it is a means to identify you. No one else has the same number.

  2. They will take absolute proof of your ID, and yes that will include your NI number.

It is to prove who you are and when you send in updated payslips at 6 month intervals, they can check that they belong to you.

Whats the problem anyway? IF you are going to do and IVA you need to put all your cards on the table.

Bankruptcy is something else. I wouldn't recommend, if one can avoid that route. At least with an IVA after the 5yrs you start your credit rating again, from scratch. Bankruptcy is ALWAYS on your record and can hinder you getting along in life, with jobs or even travel visas.
