Question:

For professional jobs, is it okay to have a one week notice to quit instead of two weeks?

I've always thought it is unfair to employees that you are supposed to give 2 weeks notice when quitting a job. I mean, managers don't have to give you 2 weeks notice to lay you off. Does anyone know if having a one week notice for quitting a full time job is okay? Or do you really have to work 2 agonizing weeks?

  1. Then put yourself in the employers shoes for a moment. Will they be disappointed to see you go? Did you do a good job for the company? Should you stick around to train someone new for your position?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions then perhaps it is only fair that you give 2 weeks notice. 2 weeks out of a life time is not much to ask and it does show strength of character and integrity.

  2. No.... Give your two weeks. Usually if you are going to work for a competitor they will let you go earlier. Just communicate to them you are able to leave earlier if it suits them, but you are are willing to be here no more than 2 more weeks.

  3. Usually managers give plenty of notice when they lay you off.

It's employment at will....you can leave any time you want.

However, if you want ot use that employer as a reference, you may want to give them professional 2 weeks notice.

If you don't care to use them as a reference, then forget them; you'll never see them again.  You can quit any time you please.

Giving 1 week notice doesn't sound that bad anyhow.
