For seo and driving traffic to my website is it better to have a blog ont he main website or a sub domain ?

It does not matter anymore, there is clearly many cases the prove either one will work well.

Check out the highest ranking blogs and you will examples of each.

What matters is the content is keyword rich and has visitor value.

This is what Google is looking for these days.

If your site is new there would be no difference, however if you have an aged domain some traffic and a pagerank start the blog in the root of close to it. This way your PR weight helps the blog. Also your url will be shorter and more appealing.  

More important will be your posting structure, cater to less competitive highly searched keywords and use them in the tags and titles. Make sure you post relative content as well regardless of the niche.

You can use either one. Just make sure not to use both! Doing so will result in duplicate content being indexed, with the risk of getting penalized.
