Are teachers allowed to tell other students that another student is failing/going to fail for the year. Also telling the student that she doesnt do work and is always skipping...

Isnt there something like student confidentiality can she get in trouble for telling other students about those things?

  1. I'm a high school teacher, so lets see if I can clear things up a bit.

Is it right for this teacher to do this?  No

Is it against any policy?  Probably not, depends on the school

Is it ethically or morally right?  Absolutely not

Would a good teacher do this?  Not in a million years

But lets be honest, you know who's failing what class and who's passing what class.  Students always know which one of thier compadres are not doing their work, are lazy, are not showing up to class, and/or are not putting forth enough effort to pass the class.  The kids who are on the fence, meaning the kids who are close to failing, have to know who is lower than them.  I know in my class my students know exactly what other people are capable of and not capable of.  Funny thing, when I call students up to see their test/quiz/quarter grades, the other students play a little game and guess what the score is going to be.  Surprisingly enough, they are usually right on.

This sounds to me like another ploy for a poor student to try to pin their failure on a teacher.  The teacher isn't without fault either, if what you say is true.  I still doubt you or anyone else could make anything stick to even the worst teacher in a case like this.  Good luck if you wish to try though.

  2. If someone tells on the teacher, the teacher will probably just get a warning.

But the main problem here sounds like the failing student. Instead of being embarrassed about what others find out about his/her grade the student should swallow his/her pride and start hitting the books more, and attending class. It's never too late to  improve your grades-even if you start in the next class.

  3. There is technically no rule against it, but it is VERY unethical to do so.  I find that most students share grades with each other as it is.

Some teachers use it to shame students into doing better, but it is a very bad idea to do this.

  4. I don't think it is right at all for a teacher to tell a student about another student's grades, or anything else about another student. A student should be able to confide in a teacher without having doubts that the teacher will tell others. On the other hand, I don't see it wrong for a teacher to consult a student about not doing work or skipping class. That ,however, is the student's responsibility. I hope this helps, but always know that there will be teachers that wouldn't be the best to confide in and there will be students who don't do work and skip class. This is not meant in anyway at all to be offensive to anyone, but I do hope this helps. :)

  5. It depends on what you mean by get in trouble. They might get into serious trouble if it were an ongoing thing. Also, is there any proof other than students saying that the teacher said it?
