START your DRIVING Test with a PRE-Trip. Explain everything your looking for between the tractor and trailer.

Get in: Adjust all mirrors, seat, steering wheel etc... start tractor, do air-brake test to see if the alarm will come on. ANY fast drop of air indicates a potentially air-leak between tractor and trailer. Check all gages and ARTICULATE everything you are doing.

Driving: Key WATCH and ARTICULATE everything you see. Example:

"I am looking at R mirror, now left mirror. I see a light coming up, I am slowing down now. I am going to swing wide right, I will look in my right and left MIRRORS to see if I am clear.... I see a traffic jam ahead...I am in school zone, SPEED is 25 mph..." Look AS FAR AS YOU can see to adjust the tractor and trailer to a mile's view. Remember you must adjust the tractor to both close and far driving conditions. so again, let him know " I am looking all the way to the bridge to see what traffic looks like, I am looking directly in front of the tractor for any potential cars being too close"

All of this articulates that your observing your environment and let's him know you have the potential to be a safe driver. He cannot read your mind. I can't stress the frequency of LOOKING AT BOTH MIRRORS and letting him know each time you do it. Keep the truck a SAFE distance of any car. Slow and easy.
