"The steeper the slope of a ramp is, more force will be required to pull a mass up it"

-What is the dependent varible and what units is it measured in

-What is the independant variable and what units is this measured in

-What are the three controlled variables?

  1. Dependent variable: The amount of force needed to pull the mass

    - unit: newton

Independent variable: The steepness of the ramp (gradient)

    - unit: degrees (i.e. an angle of 30degrees, 60degrees, etc)

    Controlled variables:

    1) The object tested (i.e. mass, shape, everything must be the same)

    2) The surface of the ramp (i.e. wood, plastic, etc)

    3) The object used to measure the amount of force needed (spring scale, etc)

  2. independent variable (one that you change): gradient of ramp

dependent variable (measured): force required (perhaps in newtons)

controlled variables (one that you must keep the same for each test): here are some:

    1) friction of the ramp

    2) object used to determine the force required.

    3) the energy used to pull the object up.  Eg, don't jerk it up.

Hope you understand what I'm talking about.

    Good luck.

  3. the independent variable will be the height of the ramp. the dependent variable will be the force which is measured in newtons.
