For the love of Squash in Pakistan
The Pakistan Squash Federation has been training some new squash players in Lahore and Peshawar and is quite satisfied with the way the country’s new talent has been training and working for the sport. After the not so good performances shown by Aamir Atlas
Khan and Farhan Mahboob, the senior vice president of the Pakistan Squash Federation, Air Marshal Asim Suleman said that the federation is content and satisfied with how the new players are emerging and showing a great deal of improvement in their performances.
Asim, at the same time expressed his disappointment at the performances of Farhan and Aamir, despite the heavy funding from the Pakistan Squash Federation. Asim added that he is very hopeful that the new lot will revive the declining fortune of squash in
Pakistan. The senior vice president said that these newcomers will be given ample opportunities to prove their talent and mettle at the international and national platforms. Moreover, he said that these young players needed exposure and training at the same
time. Pakistan’s new lot of squash players include the names of Umar Balaj, Nasir Iqbal, Tayyab Ali, Waqar Mehboob, Waqas Mehboob, Waqas Gul, Ali Bukhari, Ahmed Amin, Danish Atlas and Faraz Khan.
Asim Suleman is a name associated with Pakistan squash for over three decades now, and wants Pakistan Squash Federation to produce great legends in the sport of squash like Jahangir and Jansher Khan. As for Farhan and Aamir, said that the federation has
been and will continue to support and fund the two athletes but in return, the federation will expect them to produce some results too.
Pakistan Squash Federation spent a few millions on the sponsoring of these athletes when they went to represent Pakistan in the Men’s World Junior Team squash championship. Unfortunately, the team was not very lucky and did not win any event. The federation
wants the tarnished glory of the sport to shine again in the land of the pure and is dedicating all possible resources towards the sport.
The secretary of the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa Squash Association and also a great name in squash, Qamar Zaman has also announced the schedule of the National Women’s Squash Championship. The championship will be taking place from the 15th to the 18th
of October at the PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex in Peshawar. He also announced the prize money of the championship that has been set at Rs. 50,000 to motivate the players. It is just one of the many steps taken by the Pakistan Squash Federation to rebuild
the lost charm of the sport in the country. It will be the first national event in the province that will be giving female players an opportunity to exploit their talent in the sport. Qamar Zaman appealed to government and other organizations to support the
event through sponsorships and advertisements.
The top female squash player at the moment is Maria Toorpakai Wazir and resides on the 72nd position in the world squash rankings. She is not only a celebrated player, but has also worked towards the promotion of Pakistan. In the mid of September,
Maria organized a walk to express her solidarity with the flood victims and collected funds for the Prime Minister Relief Fund. It was a peaceful walk which started from the Qayyum Sports Complex ended at the Stadium Square, Peshawar. Maria managed to attract
some of the big personalities associated with different sports of Pakistan.
Maria is currently training in Malaysia and will be representing Pakistan in the Asian Games and is aiming to improve her world rankings to the top ten squash players of the world. While talking to the media before leaving for a three month training camp
in Malaysia, Maria said that she will win more medals for her country and that she will work with utter dedication to win against some of the best squash players of the world at the Asian Games.
