Question:

For the past week or so, a cicada has featured in my dreams. What does this mean?

This morning, I dreamt about a black plastic bin bag on my bedside chest, and there were flies (grey-spekled house-fly sized and black ones about as big as this asterisk *).

Then in the middle of the floor on the rug was a creature that looked like a yellowy-greeny-brown cicada from the front, but from the back, looked like a dragonfly (Or it might've been a cicada and the 'dragonfly body' was actually its back legs).

Then I went out into the upstairs hall, where Mum was there too. I asked her what the creature was and sjhe said she didn't know.

Then she threw a massive cube of Oasis 9that gritty greeny-blue foam you put plants i) and it rolled about like a dice. The cicada climbed on it as the Oasis rolled and evetually got stuck inside a hole in it. The tips of its wings, its back legs and its abdomen were poking out.

I'm terrified of insects - less so of cicadas as I like their singing - normally, but the flies didn't bother me much (I did feel grossed out seeing the bin bag, though).

I was a bit afraid of the cicada but I sort of instinctively knew it didn't mean any harm.

In previous dreams, it's just 'sat'/'stood' on one spot and the room/landscape it's been in has never been as vivid as the one I dreamt about last night.

I'm sure the cicada means something, but I don't know what.

  1. What a strange dream, it seems like there is something prophetic about it, but what...

Usually when people dream of bugs it means that they are worrying over small anxieties (things which are 'bugging' them). Bugs can also represent sexual anxieties or repressions.

It is summer, so cicadas are everywhere singing. You already say you like cicadas. Locusts & cicadas are the same thing. Locusts usually symbolize a lack of psychological nourishment, a need to shed your old skin in order to grow (as locusts do). Funny thing is your dream hints at these 2 original symbologies as being the truth.

I'm not sure what Oasis 9 is, but if you put it with plants, it must help them grow? This is funny, b/c it relates back to psychological nourishment (even though the Oasis 9 is for physical growth). Then your cicada gets stuck. Just like the flies in the bag. Everything is stuck/trapped. Are you stuck & trapped? In other dreams it was sitting still too...

Perhaps the cicada went into the oasis 9 because it needs to grow & nourish itself. The cicada could be symbolic of you. Ask yourself what nourishment you need to grow & make transformation in your life.

Dragonflies mean much the same thing - change & growth. They haven't changed since their creation (millions of years ago w/ the dinosaurs) - so symbolically they tell you to look at what areas of yourself need changing (and if others have been asking you to change, realize maybe you don't need to b/c you are just fine the way you are). Dragonflies also remind us to look for the light. Their wings have scales on them which reflect the light, so this is why they are symbolic of light.

Your dream speaks of stagnation & worry. The colors of your cicada & the shape of it's body, urge you to be creative & make some kind of change for the better, for yourself.
