I live in Michiana, unemployment is getting higher, the cities are budget cutting so much that soon it will really effect the quality of life. Crime is on the rise, housing vacancies are high, it's worse here than surrounding areas.

What are you experincing?

Do you plan to leave the midwest because of it?

I DO!

  1. I'm in Fort Wayne, and it feels like it's been bad, economically anyway, since I moved here in '04.  In almost every job I've had, I have been working closely with at least one person who told me they used to make big bucks at a factory, then got laid off.  Foreclosure rates are one of the highest in the country.

Then again, a lot of the country is catching up-- the economy's c**p nationwide now, and the Midwest's home prices are actually holding a lot better than places like Florida and California, so I suppose we can't be too bitter.

I'm holding onto a part-time service job that I don't much enjoy because I know that services are more secure than most fields around here are.  Because of that, I don't feel super-scared.

Am I moving?  Nope-- my fiance loves the city, so I'll stay.  But I'm having a lot of trouble meeting young, bright people who actually want to stay.  I'll get to know someone, then they'll start talking about plans to leave within a year.
