For those of you in a tizzy over Hurricane Gustav...?

It's easy, from the outside looking in, to say, "We shouldn't have to pay to rebuild New Orleans", or, "Why don't they just relocate the whole city???"

My question is, where would you have us relocate four-hundred THOUSAND people? Detroit? Cool, you haven't done much in the way of making history these days anyway. Hollywood? Awesome. Who needs movies anyway? New York City? Okay, nix the Stock Exchange. Vegas? Alright, but then where would Donald Trump vacation?

How about your little podunk cities of Dogwash Junction, California or Slickpoo, Idaho? Do you have room for them all? Are you willing to share your land, your schools, your grocery stores, your nail salons, your daycares, your hospitals, and your restaurants with four-hundred THOUSAND people? And while we're on the subject, where would you have the New Orleans business owners relocate to? Believe me, we're in business down here for a reason. We work hard to make an honest living, we serve the community with a happy heart, and we ARE what makes this city such an irreplaceable part of history. Never been to Mardi Gras? What a shame. The experience of Jazzfest escapes you? Sad. We have contributed for centuries to the heritage of what the United States of America is proud of and for you to just pluck us up and have us move...is a horrific thought, or lack thereof.

So before you spout off about how your tax dollars are being "wasted" rebuilding New Orleans, think about how you'd feel if Slickpoo went under.

  1. I am NOLa born and raised...however I have lived in Houston since 1979...To this day when people call me a Texan I correct them and say " No I am not a Texan I just live here...I am from New Orleans"...I still own property there and one day hope to return...once the mayor has been replaced...I feel more sadness thinking that Gustavo may hit than if it was coming here to Houston...For every "why should we spend tax money to rebuild?" I hear I tend to get into an argument asking why they constantly rebuild California after earthquakes and fires...just consider the source

...these days small minds abound and the common thought in United States is if it isn't my home town it does not matter....Good luck y'all my prayers are with you.

  2. Thank you for the support!

Actually, "moving" New Orleans would require relocating 1,300,000 people - not just 400,000.

History, architecture, culture, and the fact the city is home to many people are usually mentioned when the topic of rebuilding is discussed.  However, those factors (while significant) are NOT why NOLA is important to the rest of the United States.

Much of America's critical national infrastructure is in or around New Orleans, and the cost of even attempting to move it would be in the Trillions of Dollars.

It is theoretically possible to move the indstry and the population, but  the Mississippi river, the Gulf of Mexico, and the oil fields cannot be moved. To even attempt to replace New Orleans would would fail.

  3. it sucks, and i'm not taking sides here, but how many times do you have to get burned before you realize the stove is hot? How many times do you rebuild after all that death and destuction before you say its no good anymore? Personally, i couldnt live here in seattle if i knew earthquakes were going to keep hitting and destroy everything. i wouldnt want to live in fear. But i also completely understand your stance of wanting to stay in your hometown with all its cool characteristics. Moving to an 'alien' town would be saddening.  it really sucks. i say, come up here to seattle/ tacoma area, theres plenty of room for those that want to relocate,  and you guys could increase our economy even more!

  4. these people don't think . they just need somewhere to focus their anger. Because new orleans needs assistance they see us as taking their tax money . in reality what we got is a fraction of what has gone to our recent wars. and even what goes into the military private sector. well these are trying times, and I suppose it may be a little unreasonable to expect people to be compassionate on a personal level with all the large scale insanity.

  5. I;m very mad that its hitting were i live.Y is it always us in New Orleans?Y is it us?That stinks.
