For those of you who breed how do you do it Or Accidential breedings can answer too?

Ok I took in a pregnant stray back in april and she had 8 puppies. I did all I could and all 8 survived. I read all I could on welping and raising puppies and in my mind did a good job but good lord they destroyed my bathroom and mentally wore me out the first few days...not to mention all the work they were.

So just out of curiosity for those of you on here always asking questions about their newborn pups how do you all do it? Do you keep them inside, do you weigh them daily, do you check on them 6000 times a day and during the night like I did, do you keep a baby monitor on to hear if there is a problem?

Was I just over anal and that is why I can never see myself doing it again or do you all actually have the time to do this?

Thanks Christine

  1. For the first I'd say 5 to 6 weeks I'd say that the mommy will take care of them if the mom is a good mom that is...Then some litters I have they will not eat the dog food dry so I have to add a lil bit of warm water to it so that they will eat... And where you have the mom does she go outside to the bathroom cause thats the trick is if you have an adult dog there, they teach the lil ones to go outside, its not actually considered potty training, you just have to train yourself to get up every so often and let them outside then sooner or later will get the hint and no that they need to potty they go to the door for that..

IT is alot of work and its got its ups and downs but then in the end after you've gotten to watch them be born watch them grow and then ready to sell or give away it will have gone so fast.. its a huge joy! Best of luck to you!

  2. Yep, I actually do this.

Just another one of the reasons that I try to discourage people from breeding.  It is a lot of work to do it properly, but it's a labor of love for me.

  3. I remember as a kid my mom bred Cocker Spaniels... and we did not check on them. we would make sure the mommy was in there with them once awhile and make sure they looked good once or twice a day. Mommy knows what she is doing. They dont have someone in the (wild) helping them and most wolves do it on their own!   Everyone is different. I would just thank yourself for making sure they were ok! no one else can thank you enough!

  4. Pretty much.  We had a whelping box for our girl and the pups and mommy did a very good job of taking care of the pups herself.  They stayed in the whelping box until they were big enough to crawl out (big pups - rotties) then they led me on a merry chase!  I was chasing pups all over the house and carrying them to and from.    Daddy dog took over a lot of the responsiblies as soon as the pups got big enough that he wasn't scared of them anymore.  He slept with them, groomed them and rounded them up when mom wanted a break.  We gave him an A+ on his parenting report card.  We actually were quite surprised to see a 120 lb rottie being so gentle with his babies.

When the pups were weaned and ready to go to their "forever" homes, we all heaved a great sigh of relief.

  5. Thanks for the flash back to 10 years ago and being on puppy duty during summer break. My mother bred 3 cocker litters and I can tell you it was madness. We did everything you did and more. There were owners to interview deposits to keep track off, show potentials to separate etc.

Second litter we had a dark brown runt male. he was the LOUDEST of them all. When Jade was away from them a night he would start howling for a good 5-10 minutes and you could hear it all through the house >.<

As much as we loved doing it we just couldn't afford to keep doing it. We retired our dogs had them fixed and settled into normal pet ownership and there is no way i'd do it again unless i had hit a 200 million lotto jackpot.

  6. Sorry I am not a breeder but I have 2 contacts who are breeders and I will star this so they can see it
