.... modern books ahould be read before one dies?

I am taking six months to travel and I am trying to compile a list of books to have read by the time I have returned home!

By modern I mean anything that isn't deemed classical (like Shakespeare)

You might find this a little unusual, but I'd recommend 'Zen Mind, Beginners Mind' by Shunryu Suzuki.

lol I will probably get laughed at for this. But definitely read Harry Potter, those are not just for children. I myself am an adult and love them, as well as many other older people. Those are definitely classics. Lance Armstrong's book "It's Not About the Bike" is really good...but you might be able to wait until after you die to read that. Just giving some suggestions.
