For those of you who wear glasses, what type of lenses do you prefer? Glass, plastic, or polycarbonate?

I recently was prescribed polycarbonate lenses and I found that I was experiencing severe eye strain with them on and things looked hazy. I then read an article which stated that some people experience inherent distortions and something called "chromatic aberrations" with a polycarbonate lens. I am wondering if I should switch to glass or plastic lenses.

  1. I prefer polycarbonate.  Glass is too heavy and plastic scratches easily.

  2. I prefer polycarbonate, even though they are heavier than plastic, the offer much more scratch resistance than plastic or glass combined. I once had a pair of plastic lenses (asked for polycarb but the lab mixed up) and within a week there was a huge gash on the lens and I had done nothing out of the ordinary.

  3. Start by going back to the eye doctor who presribed your glasses and see if the glasses actually match the prescription.   If they don't, you have a right to get the problem fixed, no questions asked.   In the states, most of the chain places (like Eyemasters or Pearl Vision) also have a policy of replacing lenses for free if your doctor says you need the change, so you might also have the doctor check your eyes again.   If you wore your old glasses to the point of blurring, etc., your eyes may have lost tension between the first exam and wearing your new glasses.

Chromatic aberation means that colors do not come to focus at the same point,  That is not what you are describing.

In the extreme, pay the $35-40 bucks and go to a different doctor for a new eye exam.

  4. glass

  5. Mine's plastic...

I am not really satisfied with them, they got scratched easily.

  6. plastic (Fiber) is good as it is light weight

    but be prepared for scratches
