  1. Placing the baby on its back reduces the incidence of SIDS more so than any other sleep position, including side-sleep, which was previously recommended to prevent possible choking. No conclusive evidence, however, exists that back-sleep increases the chance of choking. While the baby should never be placed on her stomach to sleep, parents should encourage supervised "tummy time."

Many parents place babies on their stomachs to sleep because they think it prevents them from choking on spit-up or vomit during sleep.  But studies in countries where there has been a switch from babies sleeping predominantly on their stomachs to sleeping mainly on their backs have not found any evidence of increased incidence of aspiration, pneumonia, choking, or other problems.  In addition, the AAP has reviewed all the scientific literature and found that there is no additional risk of choking on vomit when babies sleep on their backs. Experts actually feel that babies are at a higher risk for choking or aspirating when placed on their tummies than they are when placed on their back.

Should sleeping “wedges” be used for infants?

A:       The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that devices designed to maintain sleep position are not recommended since they have not been sufficiently tested for their safety and none have been shown to be effective at reducing the risk of SIDS

  2. If you're afraid of your baby choking after feeding at night make sure you burp her for several minutes.  They also have those wedges that you can buy that keeps an infant on their side.

  3. I never waited at all. you have to make sure she burps though. even if she doesn't, it's not likely there will be any harm done.

  4. Ehhh. I hate that too. I try to wait a little after I feed him but sometimes he doesnt want to wait.  When he is tired he wants his crib to lay down! He doesnt spit up everytime though. Make sure you are burping her good.

  5. that always worries me too. just make sure your burp her good and wait 5-10 mins

  6. You can put her back in cribs after makeing her burp by patting her back.

  7. As long as she has a good burp, it should be okay.  I would put my daughter to sleep on her side using one of those infant support pillows.  When she was strong enought o hold up her head and turn her head, I didn't worry as much.

  8. Put her asleep on her side and put something in her back, a rolled up diaper or cloth, so she can't roll back on her back.

Laying on her side reduces the chance to choke in milk that she will spit up eventually.  After the next feeding take the other side.

  9. How old is your baby?  You could always just hold your baby on your shoulder in a slight up right position after feeding for a few minutes.  This will ensure the gasses may work its way up.  I found that after feeding my little girl, I did this and once she had burped without me having to pat her back just in case I woke her, I could put her back without fear of her being sick!  You can lay her on her side and prop a rolled up blanket in front of her belly from her neck down away from her face.  This would ensure that she wouldnt be able to roll onto he front if she is still too young but able to roll back onto her back.  The midwives in the hospital placed my little girl onto her side when she was coughing just after being born.  You could always buy one of those sensor plates that you position under their mattress.  It works by sounding off an alarm if your baby stops breathing.  They normally cost about £80 but a friend of mine got hers off ebay for about £20!  Peace of mind if nothing else x
