For those who are a Catholic/Christian Scientist?

If you believe in God, do you think God created the universe? Or you believe that random chemical reactions created it. Or both? Let me know what you think.

  1. I was raised Catholic and I did science at University so I guess I qualify.

I would just like to point out that some priests beleive in evolution!!!! In fact I am pretty sure the Catholic church is not actually against it as a theory!!  For the creation of the universe I am sure there are some who beleive that science was involved, but the instigator was God.

I beleive in the science as the evidence supports it over and over again....but you have to have God in there somewhere if you want to believe that.

  2. Of course, Catholics think God created the universe.

Most Christians do not take the stories of creation in the Bible literally. Catholics believe the book of Genesis tells religious truth and not necessarily historical fact.

One of the religious truths is that God created everything and declared all was good.

Catholics can believe in the theories of the big bang or evolution or both or neither.

On August 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII said in his encyclical Humani generis:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Here is the complete encyclical: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_x...

The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation. At this time, the theories of the big bang and evolution are the most logical scientific explanations. However tomorrow someone may come up with better ideas.

As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and responsible modern science can live in harmony.

The Clergy Letter Project an open letter endorsing the Theory of Evolution signed by over 10,000 clergy from many different Christian denominations: http://www.butler.edu/clergyproject/rel_...

    With love in Christ.

  3. Chemistry??? What century do you live in???

God said 'Let there be light' and BANG! there was light. and heat and energy and... well, you've heard of the primordinal egg? Now you know where it came from.

Modern physics talks about colliding branes, but it never considers that such vibrations could well be considered as God speaking.

Ah. I get it. Random chemical reactions are statistcally  incapable of creating LIFE. That, too would  require a noncorporeal Intelligence with the ability to influence odds. But then, there have been experiments which prove that humans DO have that ability, at least at a rudimentary level. So again, Occam's Razor favors Intelligent Design.

  4. God created the chemical reactions

  5. I know I'm not a scientist, but I believe not even science can prove this and that It's left unknown. Only God knows.

  6. I didn't think the two were that similar in belief.

As a Catholic who keeps pretty close to what is actually taught, God created the universe, all things seen and unseen. The method by which He created it is not important - Genesis tells us He spoke it into existence.

It is clear that Creation perpetuates itself through physical and chemical reactions - ie photosynthesis and myotic cell division, etc.
