  1. For the most part, Canidae is a good food.  Since it is labeled for all life stages, lactating females may need more to maintain weight.  Lactating females with seven puppies will usually lose weight while even on high powered puppy foods.  I wouldn't switch back at this time if the Canidae is working for you.

  2. I have to agree with Loki.

She is nursing puppies she really needs the extra fat and stuff.

So puppy food would work best.

I recently switched my dogs over to Nutro Ultra (holistic)

and they are doing better then ever! my chi was losing weight.

So just one week of feeding Nutro he has gained 7 onces.

    I was amazed.

Its not the best dog food out there.

but seems to be the only dog food my dogs LOVE and do great on.

    Good Luck!

those puppies are so cute! thanks for the pics.

  3. Are you feeding her enough, the feeding amounts for ALS is increased for pups and nursing dames, check the bag or the website!!

  4. If she is nursing 7, then she likely needs far more food than normal. Check the bag, it says that pregnant or lactating b!tches should be fed more.

  5. I'd check with your vet. She is most likely losing weight because the puppies are nursing still. She should be eating more right now to compensate for this.

    Found this:

Nursing mothers require twice the amount of food as suggested in the daily guidelines and may be fed 3 to 4 times a day.

    and this:

During Lactation and Puppies up to six months old, require twice the amount of food as an adult dog and they should be fed 3 to 4 times a day.

  6. If she is nursing, she needs more protein and fat than the food is giving her -- Canidae is a little substandard, on that score.

You'd be better off putting her on puppy food, or at least supplementing her kibble with higher-fat hamburger (raw or boiled) and regular cottage cheese.

  7. ok for question that have to do with your pets health go to the vet first thing why ask people that cant be 100% sure what the heck there talking about. go the the vet if you care about your dog/

  8. Actually it is best to give her as much as she wants. You can't forget most of the nutrients she's getting from this food is going into the milk to feed the pups. So she needs to replace what she lost. Once again feed MORE. I also reccomend giving her some raw red meat along with her kibble every other day. (never ground!)

  9. She definitely needs to eat a lot more when she's nursing.  Personally I'm not that fond of canidae either, but I feed mine Flint River Ranch.  For more information, you can visit their website:
