  1. It depends on the age of the child and the character traits of the child.

We started in the 8th grade.  This is our 3rd year of homeschooling. We have had several different creative schedules during these 3 years.

It would be better if we could oversee our son the entire day.  We can't  so we just accept it.

Even with the less than perfect situation, homeschooling works better for our family than public school.

    He is learning.

  2. Well it depends on the age and the ability of the child. If you think that they are old enough to work independtly then it s fine.

  3. maybe but you can have i full time day job as well!

  4. Yes, I have friends that do this.  It gets a little challenging with the schedule, but it's completely possible.  If your kids are old enough to stay home alone, you can assign them work to complete during the day and then teach the next day's lessons (whatever is necessary) at night.  If they are not old enough yet, you'll need to work out some sort of childcare arrangements.

It is definitely possible though, as you get to pick your own schooling schedule - and homeschooling doesn't take anywhere *near* as long each day as classroom school does.

  5. I guess that really depends on how well regulated your children are.   I know of one mom who assigns the work in the morning and comes home in the afternoon and just checks it.  So it can work for some.

I work long hours part time and it is not doing so well.   I have to be there to supervise and keep my kids on task.  I also have a problem with fatigue, so I am not always as effective as I could be.

I suppose if your kids can work independently and your job isn't too exhausting you could do it.  And I think If you had a spouse to help out it wouldn't be to daunting.  But I wouldn't know anything about that.

  6. Yes, it is possible.  Homeschooling doesn't take as much time as regular schooling, so you can manage to do it in the evenings or on weekends or whatever works with your schedule.

Or I knew a single mom working a full time job who set up an arrangement with a relative to take the child and teach some of the lessons while the mom was at work.  This arrangement worked well for them, though you'd have to check your state's regulations to see if such an arrangement is allowed in your state.

As others have said, depending on the ages of the children, you might need to figure out some kind of babysitter or daycare for them while you are at work, but it can be done if you are committed to the idea.

One caveat:  Be careful that you don't become too trusting of them to do it all themselves.  I knew a boy who was homeschooled while his parents ran a business.  They trusted him and his brother to work on lessons on their own while the parents were busy working.  The boy discovered where they keep the answer keys and simply copied answers for everything and learned almost nothing.  Then they placed him back into a public school and he was so far behind with little hope of graduating because he was so far behind.  (Mind you, I've known lots of homeschoolers and this is the only one I've known to have a problem like this.  And the same child might well have cheated throughout school if he were in a brick and mortar school, too, so you can't blame it all on homeschooling.  But I'm suggesting that you have to be careful to not assume that they can do it all on their own without checking periodically to verify that they really are learning the material.)

  7. I worked full time on the midnight shift when I homeschooled.  It is difficult but possible.

  8. Depends on you. I work out of my home part time and home school others here work out of home day jobs full time and make it work.

It also depends on your situation. Do you have someone to watch the kids during the day? Someone who would be willing to work with them? Are they old enough to stay at home all day without you? Can they do the majority by themselves? Are you willing to out in the four hours (on average) it takes after an 8 hour day if you have to teach everything.

Everything about home school is personal. We all do it a little differently. Some do all of their work during the day others at night. Some follow lesson plans to the letter and others go with what the child is interested in (unschooling).

  9. Of course it is. If you homeschool you could school at night, part time, on the weekends, through the internet, etc. Lots of homeschoolers do this. :)
