  1. Are you in Bensenville, IL???

I'm about twenty minutes away from you.

I eat a 100% vegan diet and by clipping coupons and keeping a sharp eye on where the best prices for various things are, I spend just under 300 dollars a month for a family of 3 (me, my husband and my daughter). And we eat WELL, kiddo, I make almost everything myself - buying prepared food is costly - but I make everything from pies to cookies to stir fry to stew.

Guess what, I do all my shopping at Jewel-Osco, Harvest Fresh and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. There is a Trader Joe's in Arlington Heights, there's a few in the Chicago area, there's also one in Lake Zurich and Norridge, I think (but those are a haul for you to get to, even though they're my neck of the woods).

Vegan food is pretty much effortless to shop for. Just avoid the dairy and meat areas and afterwards, just an occassional label-check works.

Stuff I find in Jewel-Osco: Dry and canned beans, whole grain pastas, canned tomatoes, tofu in trays, chips, soy-based ice cream, soy milk or rice milk or almond milk, meatless burgers and hotdogs.

I go to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for the harder to find stuff, like vegan "energy" bars (to grab for a workout), nutritional yeast (high in hard-to-find vitamins and nutrients and makes food taste cheesy), sprouted grain bread (just a preference - you can find vegan bread at Jewel), various snack foods like vegan chocolates, vegan frozen dinners if I'm in a time pinch.

I go to Harvest Fresh or other low-cost fruit and vegetable market, or I go to a local farmer's market, and I buy all my fruits and vegetables there. They don't need an ingredients list to tell you they're vegan.

Good luck, I hope you find what you're looking for.

If you ever feel like going north a bit, there's some AMAZING vegan-friendly restaurants like The Chicago Diner (it's almost in Boystown actually, best veggie place I've ever been to), there's also Cousin's Incredible Vitality, a raw, vegan eatery on Irving Park Road (take Rt 19 all the way there - you'll never have to even make a turn and 19 goes pretty much into Bensenville as far as I'm aware of).

And in northern Chicago there's a suburb called Evanston and there's an all-vegan store that sells vegan-sloganed clothing, hard to find vegan food, vegan supplements, vegan shoes, and offers you tons of newsletters and handouts to find vegan things around you. It's called "Ethical Planet". It'll probably be a 45 minute drive for you (I get there in half an hour from Arlington Heights) but it's worth a stop on your way to veganism.
