For those who run or work at a daycare?

what's the worse case of child neglect you've seen? My friend works at a daycare and she sees it all the time. Kids coming in filthy, stinky with no shoes on or raggity clothes.

One mom tried to bring her kid in with chicken pox, of course they told her she couldn't drop him off. I think you are legally allowed to report cases of any neglect or abuse you see.

  1. i worked for two different daycares for about 5 years. i've seen teachers at the daycare hit kids under there, yes they were fired for it. i have personally taken a child home because it was the moms turn to have the baby, and she couldnt get there until 9pm, long after we closed and dad refused to pick up the child, all because it was moms turn. we are and did report all abuse.

  2. I would think you would be legally liable not to report stuff you see. That is just my opinion, but I would for sure report some stuff if I thought the child was in danger.

  3. MY son is still to young for daycare, but I used to bring my niece into daycare every morning, and pick her up in the late afternoon.  I also was there for special functions, and their little field trips.  I got into a conversation with one of the workers about this issue. They have to report any kind of suspicion about any kind of abuse.  If they do not, then they are also held accountable for it.

  4. My mom taught kindergarten and 1st grade for 30 years and has reported people countless times. Most of the time, not much is done about it unless it's really, really bad. The systems are overloaded and the rights of bio parents trump the safety and well being of their kids most of the time. Authorities will often look the other way when it comes to immigrants as well, because God forbid we might insult another's culture. We certainly don't want anyone getting their feelings hurt do we, even if the kids are left in the dust. My mom has seen parents drug their kids, allow boyfriends to abuse them, send them to school needing medical care and so on and has reported them. Most of the time nothing is done beyond interviews and maybe a home check. It gets so frustrating to the people who see it, try to help, but have no power. This is our politically correct society at work, where everyone's rights are more important than those we must protect the most, who cannot speak for themselves. I was a vet tech before I became a mother and animals don't have it any better.

  5. I work at a day care the worst I've seen is a dad screaming at his 3 year old in the parking lot for not walking fast enough. First and only time I've met her dad.

  6. yeah that is sick...I bring my kids to a daycare and some kids look so dirty. It's a tough calll because kids will be kids and who knows what happened on the way there (maybe they spilled stuff on their coat).

Chicken Pox - well that mom should have known better.

Anyhow, if you have sufficient amount of proof  and TRULY feel these kids are in danger then report them.

Be prepared that the mom will probably pull the kid out of the facility though and might be worse off somewhere else.

  7. When you work in childcare you are supposed to report any suspected abuse or neglect.  It's always good to document things as well with a notebook so you can remember dates and times about certain things you have seen going on with said child.  We had a child that we had to bathe about every other day.  He was sick and dirty all the time.  It was called in and investigated.

  8. I work in a great school now but have seen some pretty scary things at other centers I have worked in. Yes about reporting neglect or abuse. I have thankfully not been put into that position but would report any without a doubt.

I worked at one place where they had all day care, from 6:30am to 6:30pm. Several of the children were left there after hours because parents wanted just a little more time to themselves. I had one student who didn't get picked up until close to 7:30 daily. Sad! I closed the school and it was always the same late parents. I also worked the day after Christmas and had 2 children with me whose parent's were just resting at home and didn't want to deal with the children.

The sadest thing I remember is one girl who was so dirty everyday. Her clothes stank and her jacket was disgusting. No joke, this girl was like pigpen. She went home on a playdate with another child and the child's parent washed her coat. Her mom got mad!  Poor thing! It was hard but I did have to have a little chat with her mom about this. It wasn't a case that needed to be reported but when other children saw that this child was "different" and didn't want to play with her because of her appearance, something had to be said.

Parents are always trying to bring their children in sick. They have come in with pink eye, chicken pox, fevers...you name it. I sent them right back home and some of the parents just don't understand why.

  9. my mom works at a daycare and this child about 5 years old kept coming in with large buses and then one day came in crying saying her mommy hit her, the day care reported it.

  10. I dont think i have seen anything that bad.  But yes, neglect and abuse is supposed to be reported if suspected. It is the Law!

  11. I worked at a daycare for a year..while I was preg and I got one little boy ( 2 yrs old) who's mother had beat him while she was preg with her 5th child...all of them had been taken away and seperated :( We worked through a ton of his issues, but once I started showing it was like ww3! He'd come at me. He'd scream, kick, try to throw things at my belly..as soon as I moved him into the teacher next door's room (for my own safety) he was perfectly fine...I guess just the visual of my belly brought back his fears :( It was really sad...kids would come in with ratty clothes, no shoes, smelly....I had one little girl I bathed daily because she came in covered in dirt like that never gave her a bath! Eventually, I was put on bedrest bc of stress due to work and I never went back..I decided to stay at home with our son. I've seen some really bad stuff though.
