my reason for asking is looking at the stops on some of the virgin cross country trains from newcastle the impression i get is some go via york and some go via doncaster. therefore to me doncaster must be a major rail junction.

if it is major junction what is this junction called and what is the junction just south of york called

  1. Doncaster is a major junction insofar as trains pass through from different directions rather than just one single set of tracks  running through a station.  Here in UK we rely on station names rather than junctions that might be between stations.  If there is a junction south of York, very few regular rail passengers would know its name unless it is actually at a station.  There are only a few station names - Clapham Junction, Watford Junction  and Willesden Junction - that include the word Junction
