For vegetarians only?

I was a good vegan for most of my life. Then I went to college and began eating meat, smoking, I gained 25 pounds, etc. I really want to go back to my old diet, but it's been 10 years and I just cant seem to break these habits...I go to the store, pass Mcdonalds, see someone smoking and BAM the problem is back. Any advise would help.

  1. you might want to talk to a therapist or counselor about these habits.  they would likely use cognitive therapy to help you look at what you're donig in a different way. cognitive therapy would force you to consider why you do these things and attempt to reshape your thoughts about them to associate them with negative relationships instead of positive ones.

  2. Try to refresh the vegan ethics again. Read the reasons for being a vegan. Many of them succeed to quit alcohol, drugs, smoking and instinctos by being a vegan.

I know it's hard to practice the veganism you alone in the present meat eating society.

  3. Refresh your mind on why you started doing these things. Are you being tru to your self?

  4. Dietary changes are a lot like smoking cessation. If you have a good reason(s) than you'll stay committed. And if diet is the only motivation, it's a good place to start, particularly with prepared foods. Most fast foods contain ridiculous amounts of MSG's, or MSG derivatives that are unhealthy. And a lot of them contain high fructose corn syrup, which is making America fat.

But if you are committed to vegetarian philosophy as well as dietary motivations, than you can stay committed. For me, when I saw pictures of how farm animals were neglectfully raised and slaughtered, I went cold turkey over night. If that kind of approach could motivate you, than Google some sites. Mercy for Animals would be a good one. And the book "Animal Grace" is a beautiful book about the spiritual connection we have between other species.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Aww :(

Well, maybe you can go on the patch or get some counseling to help you quit smoking. Then when you are really craving meat, try not to look at "meat-selling" stores and go to a near-by supermarket to buy meatless sausage, meatless pepperoni, boca burgers, vegan chicken tenders, etc. The brands I suggest are Morning Star and Yves. :) They taste just like meat.

    Good luck! :)
