  1. I am a westgerman native often traveled to Eastgermany also during the time it was GDR.

Due to the long separation and due to regional differences there is a HUGE difference in mentality which will stay on for I don 't know how long.

Most of the people there I found to have less in common than any other West-European.

@Wulf I would like that you are right but you are optimistic and idealistic and don't look at the reality .

  2. Im not a Western German but I am a Westerner USA. I lived in Weimar for months and travel there every year now for 18 years and I absolutely love it there. Some of my closest friends are in the east.

They are not much different than the West now in my opinion. Years ago there was a HUGE difference. Now the only real differences are the ones people purposely make for themselves in my eyes.

@Hilmar - Not sure your age but ive seen these changes with my own eyes in the East and yes I am optimistic that east and west will resolve things. 18 years traveling in East and West and living there too makes it very real..=] . Your country men are smart people and will make it work I am sure. You may not think it realistic but i have seen the changes in the east first hand each year for nearly 20 years and what a change!! Don't forget Weimar was the Kulturalstadt of 1999!!
