  1. look at www.grainger.com

  2. One way to use a transit is to level an area. I used to install above ground swimming pools. You need to set the transit up on the tripod and level it by turning it front to back, side to side. At each spot of turning it line up the bubble mark on top of the level untill it is in the middle in all directions. Then you need a measuring stick. You can make one by taping a tape measure to a long stick or 1x1 about 8' long. Have someone hold the measuring stick where you want to level. Focus the eye piece and take measurements.  In my case, I would mark out where the pool would sit and then take measurments at the center, and then the outer pie cut outs, all the way around the circumference. If you get, lets say a general reading of 54" and some are 52 1/4 or 55 1/2, for the 52 1/4 you would need to come down to get to your 54". Same for the 55 1/2 , you would need to fill in the 1 1/2" difference. My goal was to get the ground within an 1/8"

    Good Luck!

  3. A transit is used in layout.  It can shoot straight lines, angles, level, etc.  I am including a link to a site that covers basics of transit use, but if you really want to learn how to use it, check with a community college in your area.  Often they have courses in using instruments.  Hope this helps.
