it is believed that they competed with neanderthal man and, because of superior intelligence, neanderthals couldn't compete and became extinct. this is probably the most notable thing.

there are others:

their brain and bodies were "modern."

their tools and weapons showed insight and forethought.

their ability to show self expression was and still is considered amazing- the cave paintings in spain and france are looked at as works of art. the naturalism shown in the animals is considered "modern."

they had a hyoid bone in their throats which allowed them to articulate speech and therefore the ability to communicate easily.

one other very important thing they showed through their art was a sense of "self." the silhouettes of there hands by blowing "paint" on their hand is a perfect example of this.

on the down side and a very good example that they were indeed becoming "modern" was in their hunting ability and proof that some animal species started to go extinct as a direct result of this. sounds just like us doesn't it.

Pretty much the way homo modernus is eliminating the cro magnum.  Cro Magnum was able to bring to where we are now but is in no way able to keep up with the intelligence that is forming now and will be the new evolutionary development who, with no muscles nor brain can eliminate hundreds of thousands of cro magnums with the push of a button.

Homo Sapiens in the beginning show that they were capable of language, which means they were intelligent. They also have more advanced and complex tools (from animal parts as well) which makes them stand out from the rest. Jewelry was also something that we invented. Then, they made agriculture possible (and domestication of animals for food, skins, tools, etc), which in turn led to the first cities. It was then that people left the stone ages. Apart from this, they, or we, have a bigger brain compared  to our bodies (if memory serves correct). We also showed that we were capable of producing art, and working efficiently as a team (to hunt for prey). Lastly, ceremonial burial distinguishes us from other hominids. We also made the wheel!
