For what purpose are horses kept in a field? I mean horses that aren't for riding or pulling loads.?

Is it just to keep the grass short? It just makes me wonder everytime I drive past a field near my house and see these small shaggy horses wondering around. How are they making money for the land owner?

it is because it is alot cheeper to keep your horse/pony in a field than in a stable
