I would think it is to weed out the people who come in here to spam and the people who really have no life but yahoo answers lol!

A bizzare marketting ploy to encourage as many people as possible to use the network and contribute to the advertising.

I have been invited to Yahoo sponsored events, and been awarded Yahoo!Answers awards (see the picture/avatar). I have received many Yahoo!Answers souvenirs, such t-shirts, sweatshirt, stickers, and a jacket. I attended the Yahoo!Answers birthday party, including a complimentary motel room. I was one of many "power users" who have been invited to join a Yahoo Focus Group to beta test new features.

I have been a featured user in Y!A blogs throughout the world, and I now have blog friends and contacts in every time zone in the entire world.

All of this came about because I answered lots of questions and helped hundreds (or maybe thousands) of people, while accumulating thousands of points.
