I am holidaying for several weeks in Paris in September this year. I am planning to spend a lot of time in art museums. Which ones have long queues (waiting lines), and so tickets should be pre-purchased? Here are some of the museums I'm considering (ordered by arondissement):

Louvre, Picasso museum, Pompidou Centre aka Beaubourg, Musée National du Moyen Age-Thermes de Cluny, Musée Quai Branly, Musée d'Orsay, Musée Rodin, Grand Palais, Pinacotheque, La maison rouge , Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Mitterand site, La Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain , Musée Guimet, Museum of modern art in Paris.

  1. The Louvre, Musée d'Orsay and the Pompidou.

  2. I did the Louvre, d'Orsay and the Picasso in April.

Take the Metro to the Louvre and puchase a Louvre / d'Orsay combo ticket at the bookstore outside of the metro entrance to the Louvre and save a couple bucks plus the big entrance line is outside by the pyramid.

There was no line at the Picasso museum which was quite good (not as good as Barcelona).

  3. None.  The lines are usually not very long and often there is no line at all.  Only the Orsay museum routinely has a line, and it tends to move quickly.

The longest lines are at the Eiffel Tower.

  4. If you go on the first Sunday of the month you don't have to purchase a ticket.

On other days you are going to have long lines regardless of whether or not you have pre-purchased a ticket. The lines are usually long because of the security check.

  5. musée du louvre et pompidou !

    have fun !

  6. I suggest visiting on sundays....free.

I love musee d'orsey and le louvre is a classic of course. no pun intended
