  1. Its harder to get to greens in regulation because of my lack of length off the tee. I usually miss the green because I have to use a longer club to get there.

But then, I'm often one putting because my chip or pitch to get on the green puts me in a position to get up and down.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter WHICH stokes you use to get in the hole, just how many.

  2. The strangest round I ever played was possibly considered the best and the worst all at the same time. For me I was never a strong putter. Hitting greens was no big deal for me . I always stressed the importance of the approach shot in my head but until I wanted to get really good I remained a poor putter. Great lag putter and deadly from 6 feet were nice but those are typically par saving scenarios. This left me hanging at about a 2 handicap for nearly 2 years when It should have been a +4 handicap. Those putts drove me crazy. The round I spoke of above was 14 fairways hit IR and 18 GIR. and shot a perfect scorecard regulation 72. Now at first glance this seems like a nice place to be. The glory only lasted about 2 minutes until I realized I had missed 18 birdie opportunities.

  3. Greens in regulation.  I putt fairly well.  If I get on the green in regulation, I make par frequently.

  4. probably a 1 putt.  It's not because i'm a bad putter, but i usually have a lot of GIRs in a round.  If i had more 1 putts i would have more birdies.

  5. Molly,

    Interesting question.

These two stats have always been closely correlated. If you tend to hit a lot of greens you'll tend to have a higher putting average that someone who misses more greens but then can chip and putt.

For me I tend to be a scrambler, I tend to drive it wild off the tee, hit a punch shot out of the woods up near the green and then chip and putt for a par.

So to answer your question, the GIR has always been harder for me. Thankfully I can chip and putt, because I wouldn't be able to sniff breaking 80 if I couldn't!!

    Good question.....

  6. For me, it is harder to 1 putt.  I've tracked my GIR over the past couple of years.  It's around 40%.  But I only 1 putt 1 or 2 times a round.

  7. putting by far.  Last time I played I made it to the green in regulation on just about every hole I finished w/ 1 birdie and 4 pars the rest were bogies or worse (i did have 1 blow up hole where I got a 10, went for the green but bounced into the water.)

I can putt ok, but it's just harder then the rest of the game.

  8. GIR

  9. One putt.

  10. It really depends on the player. If someone were to practice their chipping and putting a lot before they honed their full swing, they would miss a lot of greens but be able to chip it close and 1 putt it in. I personally spent a lot more time on my full swing when I was learning to play well, and could hit the greens a lot more often than save par when I missed the green, and I certainly learned to hit it on the green a lot sooner than I learned to hit it close enough to be putting for birdie on a regular basis.

  11. For me... its much easier to get 1 putt on a hole then GIR. I think because to get GIR need more skilled than 1 chip and 1 putt.... chip and putts, more felling than skill.

  12. GIR is tougher than 1 putting for me and I would think in general. The longer the distance, the less accurate you are. Of course if you only just get on the green a one putt would be very difficult.

I say we all get greens in regulation and 1 putts. That would be nice.

  13. GIR, definitely. I'm pretty inconsistent on approach shots...too worried about how far from the hole, not worried enough about hitting it solid.
