Forbes Magazine publishes list for 100 highest-paid athletes – Tiger Woods slips down to the third spot
Forbes Magazine has published the list for 100 highest-paid athletes in the world, with Tiger Woods listed on the third spot, after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao with first and second place, respectively.
Woods ruled the list since 2001 but failed to retain the position this year, as he recently earned $59.4 million against $85 million and $62 million by Mayweather and Pacquiao, respectively.
According to the Forbes reports, Woods has faced a drop of $16 million compared to his last year’s earnings and half compared to 2009, which was the highest earning year of his career.
This year, Mayweather took the top spot mainly with the help of the fights that he had with Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto, allowing him to earn the major portion of his earnings.
"There's a reason they call boxer Floyd Mayweather 'Money'," Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen said.
"He fought twice during the past 12 months, spent less than one hour in the ring to dispatch his two foes - his combined payday for the bouts: 85 million dollars".
Mayweather maximises his earnings by also acting as his own fight promoter through his company Mayweather Promotions.
"He collects all of the revenue from tickets, pay-per-view and sponsorships and covers the costs, including the purse for his opponent," he added.
In the meantime, Tiger Woods kept on losing endorsement deals because of his slumping performances, following the car accident and the s*x scandal in 2009.
Woods had to start the 2010 season late because of his personal issues and remained out of the game in 2011 due to injuries.
In addition to that, he remained winless for around two years, until he recorded a win in the Chevron World Challenge in December, 2011.
Recently, he made a strong comeback on the PGA Tour by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial Tournament. Yet, he has to win a major title since his last major victory came in the 2008 US Open.
The other golfers who made it to the list include Phil Mickelson (7th), Luke Donald (48th), Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els (91st each).
