At each pulse of a simplified model of a mammalian heart, about 40 g of blood is accelerated from 0.35 m/s to 0.45 m/s during a period of 0.10s. Calculate the magnitude of the force exerted by the heart muscle.

  1. F = ma

    a = dv/dt = 0.1/0.1 = 1m/s/s

    so F = 0.04 * 1 = 0.04 N
