US bank has struck a nerve with me. I have probabley paid up to $1,500 in overdraft fees this year and just could not take it anymore. My account does have overdraft protection but my credit card did not have enough on it to cover the charge. I was so fed up this last time when I called in and I was -85.00 because I went 7 cents over my balance....are you kidding? I force closed my account and the fees are still there. If I pay that off will I be able to open an account somewhere else?

  1. 1500 in overdraft? Really you need to cut your spending down.

But to answer your question yes you will most likely be able to, unless you have been reported to ChexSystems. They keep records of people who are constantly overdrawn, or have had their accounts closed by the banks. But if you closed it, then you will be able to.

  2. You need to get your financial house "in order" before trying to have another account. Perhaps a financial counselor could help.

  3. You will need to pay it off or they will put you into the Chexsystem database.  You also need to learn how to manage your accounts.
