Question:

Ford Bronco II starter relay question/issue

I have a 1989 Bronco II XLT, and recently replaced the relay and the starter because starter was bad, now it won't start (i hear fuel pump when turned, and a 'whizzing' type sound coming from hood->passenger side). first thing, i failed to look at the wiring on the relay and need to know:

***which solenoid does the power distribution box hook up to?***, and also:

***i have one wire hooked up to starter, should there be more? (comes from relay)***

NOTE: my battery is DEAD as dead can be, so i know that's an issue, but i tried to jump but it melted the jumper cables. Any help on the many questions i have is GREATLY appreciated!

  1. There should only be one big wire to the starter from the relay.  The relay has to be properly bolted down to metal so it's properly grounded. The wizzing you hear sounds like the starter is spinning but not engaging the flywheel.  The most likely cause it that you got a defective rebuilt starter.

  2. You should have a cable running from the battery to one side of the soleniod (relay) and on the other side of it should be a cable running back down to the starter You might have a ground wire running from the starter mountting bolt stud. There should also be a small wire that  runs to the relay,(Snaps on)

  3. First you hook up everything wrong .Solenoid to distribution no should be three wire to the starter/Take everything a loose. Go to parts store get you a manuel for your Bronco model. This sould tell you how to do this right.I only hope you didnt cause yourself more damage.
