Question:

Ford Explorer stalling when cold or wet, any ideas?

I have a 96 Explorer Sport 4.0 V6 with a 5 speed. I've had the car 5 years and it's always done this, mostly when it's been raining. I will go to apply the brake and the RPM's will drop below 1500 and if I don't pump the gas real fast it will stall. It only does it when it's real cold or mostly when it's been raining, after it warms up, it's fine. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't have the money to just go replacing parts unless it fixes it. Thanks

  1. you may need to replace the cap and wires on that one when they get old they will cause that too happen ,what it does it cause the ignition circuit to short out from moisture, and dampness, and that's usually what cause that  too happen, that should stop you from having that problem with it.good luck .

  2. Try a tune-up. Replace spark plugs and spark plug cables. Moisture can cause this problem.

  3. All I can think of is check your vacuum hoses. Whenever I have stalling problems it usually is that. Maybe a clogged fuel or air filter.

  4. There are so many things it could be here are a few ideas: If it's stalling on cold, rainy a.m's then the problem could be your distributor cap. during the night, condensation forms on the inside of distributor cap when your car engine is exposed to cold and/or wet weather, the moisture allows electrical current inside the distributor cap which may lead to engine misfiring. to avoid that the only advice i can give is if at all possible park in the garage overnight when it's supposed to be rainy or cold.

also could be a vacuum leak, plugs & points could be getting wet somehow

those would be the first things i would check!

  5. No dizzy or cap/rotor on a Ford 4.0L v6.  That engine never had that stuff on it!

Check the coil pack (Distributorless Ignition System, FTW!), fuel pressure (bad regulator possibly), intake manifold gaskets.

    Pull spark plugs and diagnose.
