Question:

Ford F250 Neutral Switch (1985 460 engine)?

When I turn the key nothing happens. Automatic with shifter in park or neutral. I suspect the neutral switch. Is there a good way to bypass it to prove it? The last few days I had been able to move the shifter to neutral and get it to start when the park position failed, but today even that won't work.

Thanks

  1. You can bypass it by shorting across the solenoid. The solenoid sends juice to the starter. To find it follow the positive wire from the battery and it goes to the solenoid. Take a s***w driver or a wire  and touch the post where the battery wire connects to the solenoid and touch the other end to the small wire terminal on the solenoid and the car will start if the key is turned on other wise it will crank over but won't start. If you use a bare wire use a glove as the wire might get hot.

  2. it is located on the drivers side of the tranny. its electronic so just buy a new one. the are not costly. if that doesnt work you have bigger problems. good luck!

  3. The Park/Neutral switch has power through it. You can take the connector off of the switch and  check for power with a test light. MAKING SURE THE TRUCK IS IN PARK WITH THE E-BRAKE FULLY ENGAGED, you can jump the switch and have someone else turn the key to start the engine. Now you understand why I was "shouting" , and why you should only do this to get the truck to where the switch will be replaced.
