  1. All cars are built to high crash safety standards.  So while some cars are somewhat better than others, car safety standards have been evolving for 40 years and they are all quite good.  There aren't any "deathtraps" out there.

Presuming, of course, that you fasten your seatbelt.

Fred is correct that trucks don't meet the same safety standards as cars.  Just look at vans, where you sit over the engine and your feet are 6 inches away from the bumper.  The other thing is the best way to survive an accident is avoid one entirely, and trucks are harder to maneuver in an emergency and more likely to roll over if you try.

  2. Try to find a 2005 or newer with the 2.0 Duratec (designed by Mazda for Ford) engine. They are good driving little cars and you should be able to find them cheap.  Check Yahoo Autos for prices that they are selling for.

  3. Don't know any exact statistics or whatnot, but a friend of mine was hit yesterday.  Tore the front right off her Focus ZX2, but she walked away just fine.  Maybe if she would have been broadsided it would've been another story . . .

  4. Poor" side-impact rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Substantially worse-than-average frequency of injury claims filed

Three-star frontal side-impact rating from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (out of a possible five stars)

  5. See these links:

The Ford Focus does not have excellent crash test ratings, but I have seen worse.

    Good luck.

  6. Your comparison to an Expedition is interesting.  The Ford Focus is built to passenger car safety standards.  The Expedition is a d**n truck all dressed up.  2 people, driving side by side, one in an Expedtion, one in a Focus, run into a brick wall at 35 mph.  Guess which one is probably walking away, and which one is going on a stretcher?  That's right, contrary to poplular opinion, the Focus, (indeed all current smaller cars) has higher safety standards.  The Expedition is built the same as an F-150 truck, and there is no passenger protection cage.
