hello. i have a 98 ford contour. the window got stuck at one point. I was however able to make it go up and down by pressing the window switch hard and a little longer than usual. it worked for few months for couple of months. at one point, that technique was not working anymore. Meantime, my car failed inspection because of that. Today I opened the door panel and poked around the inside of the door. Aty one point teh door started working again. I was all happy. However when I closed teh panel I was only able to open/close it by pressing it longer and harder. It stopped working again. I am now back to teh same square. Please help.

Please note that the window glass does not go smoothly as teh other window even when it works. I have been noticing this for couple of years. HELP!!!

  1. A new window regulator, window motor and driver's master switch will fix it for sure. If you can remove the door panel, you can change the parts. I got faith in ya, little buddy.

  2. when you had the door panel off you needed to lube the window channels with lithium grease to make the window roll easier, try it but I think your window motor is on it's last leg.

  3. HI, I think I can help you.  I have a 99 Contour.  My drivers door window jammed and would not go up or down.  I found out that the door regulator was bad.  This is the unit that controls the window.  I ended up replacing mine with a used one I bought on ebay.  All four windows are different, so make sure you get one for the door your working on.  Its not a bad job to replace.  You have to remove the door panel.  If I recall correctly it has 3 or four screws that hold it in place.  I think it took me about an hour and a half to do it.  I think I paid $50 for the used one.  I new one is a lot more.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

  4. You have a bad electrical connection within the door. You poked around and moved something that helped the situation. Go back into the door and trace all the wires running from the motor to the switch, then from the switch to the door edge where the wires enter the door. Inspect them very closely. After you find the problem, then run the window up and down with the door panel off and watch the glass. There is a guide track for each side of the door glass. Look for obstructions in the tracks. Are the tracks bent? look at the arms connecting to the glass, are they bent? are there any teeth missing from the gears? If your contour uses the long white plastic geared strip to actuate the window...is it missing teeth or is it broken?

The fact that you must push harder on the switch makes me think that the switch might be going bad as well. But if it cleared up when you poked around in the door then the trouble must be within the door.
