I know that during the American Great Depression, people were killing themselves because of their financial situations.

Do you think that these types of suicides will become a trend in the US in the near future?

  1. Actually, I do.

Furthermore, I had a talk with my wife the other night about this very thing and how I thought that if everything keeps going up and up and up to the point where a parent can no longer properly provide for his/her child(ren), they just might want to kill themselves instead of living with the knowledge that they (at least in their own hearts) are failures.

Granted, this was merely wild speculation on my part, but it wouldn't be the first story I'd ever heard about somebody committing suicide over their abysmal finances.    <")))><

  2. yes.. people are strapped, stressed, overwhelmed. I think we will see a sharp rise especially in that age group, where you think you should be further and you are tired and not getting any younger or richer or feeling any better..

and man if you think its hard as a 20 something or 30 something try being a 40-60 something and losing your life you worked so hard for.

    *sigh

bet her family wishes she were back and they could handle anything together, but...

  3. People that killed themselves during the Great Depression did it because they had lost everything in a single day.  The stock market crashed very quickly and many fortunes were lost.

People with houses in foreclosure have been watching the process for many months.  Houses are not in foreclosure because of one missed payment but many months of missed payments.

The comparison is a poor one.  The emotional devastation from sudden loss is much greater than the slow realization that someone has lost a house and will have to start again.

  4. This is a possibility, however, I would not spend too much time thinking about this because the economy is not even close to that of the Great Depression.

  5. Having read the story, there seems to be more to this than a foreclosure causing suicide.  This woman took the whole financial situation upon herself, into her own control.  This should always be a shared responsibility with total openess and honesty.  At  $7000 a month income, their dreams and house payments seemed more than do-able.  Because she was hiding the non-payments for 42 months, some sort of shame or guilt about using the money for other things lead to her committing suicide rather than opening up with honesty to her husband.  Poverty does not promote suicide.

  6. I'm not sure, It might

  7. It's possible, but this is an American Tragedy. This all boils down to greed from the lenders and brokers. No one in this Country should loose their homes, if they are trying to pay their payments.

This will have a very damaging affect on school age children, so many will have to attend different schools, leaving their friends behind, favorite teacher and familiar places, who become the new kid and here comes the school bullies.....

  8. Sorry but you cannot blame the financial institutions for this!!

It is simply down to far too many people borrowing beyond their means to repay it!!!

A terrible human tragedy but one brought on by themselves!!!

  9. people commit suicide for a variety of reasons everyday. Financial problems have always been one of the major factors. I doubt we will see a rise in the numbers due solely to money problems.
