Question:

Foreign Adoption by a Malaysian?

I'm a Malaysian resident and I've been considering adopting children from other countries, particularly from China or Japan. I have been looking for details or any agency that caters to people who plan to have adoptions such as these, but to no avail. Can someone give me a little bit of guidance?

  1. I think you would have to contact an agency in Malaysia. Also I don't think there are many (if any) children available from Japan for international adoption. Japan has been struggling with a very low birth rate for some time, and the country is pretty wealthy, so there just isn't a need to find homes outside Japan from what I know.

  2. It might be better to look for an agency that caters, instead, to the needs of the child.  Adoption is about finding a family for children who need them, not children for adults who want them.  Have you checked into foster care?  I'm sure there are children in Malaysia who need families.  Best of luck!

  3. So you are living in Malaysia now, are you a Malaysian citizen or are you a citizen of another country? If you are a US Citizen living in Malaysia then you can adopt using the US system. Otherwise you will need to follow the international adoption laws set in Malaysia.

You might want to begin with the ministry of foreign affairs:
