  1. nice soaps , shampoos, necessary stuff she may have forgotten to bring, just make sure they're pretty. candy, sweets, lotions, etc.

Think about what you would want someone to give you if you were in a new country, that might help. Oh, a map would be good too, so she wouldn't feel lost all the time. Good luck =]

  2. Where is she from??

Get things from the area that you are from.  Postcards so she can send some to home, a t-shirt (with your state/city), etc...

    Edit:

Also when you pick her up from the airport, bring a welcome sign and flowers.  I had an exchange student from Germany stay with us for five weeks this summer, and just remember to be patient with her when she asks you what something means and you have no idea (that happened a lot with me).  I know some people will tell you about awful experiences with foreign exchange students, but I had a wonderful time and would recommend it to everyone.  Also, I think she would have remebered to bring toiletries.

  3. Oh, a welcome package sounds like a wonderful idea!

Some items you might want to include could be her own:

    Shampoo & Conditioner

    Toothbrush

    Toothpaste

    Body Wash

    Hand Towels

    Any other toiletry items.

You might want to give her a map of your state or local town.

Maybe a pocket English-German dictionary in case she ever needs it.

Definitely include some American candy! She'll love that.

If your picking her up at the airport make her a welcome sign.

Also, just include anything you would want if you arrived in a foreign country.

  4. A welcome sign at the airport.  You're already opening your HOME to her, you're going to feed her, and be her transportation.  Believe me, you've signed up for something very hard and, sadly, very costly (your time and your money-your grocery bills, your water bills, all will go up).  She should be bringing YOU a thank you gift, and some students do.  Some.  Save your welcome and throw her a big party at the end of the year, if she lasts that long.
