Depends on the store.  If you are in an area with a lot of foreign students, then stores will generally recognize non-US ID.  Most stores will accept foreign passports as they are of a common design.  But no guarantees.  If you are going to be in the US for a while, get a US drivers license (required) or at least a state non-drivers ID, also from the DMV.
