Question:

Foreign Language credit for homeschool?

by  |  earlier

I am a virtual-schooled student, where you do all of your work through a computer. The school has only one language, Spanish, but I do not want to take Spanish. Ofcourse, you need a language to graduate. I want to take French, so I was thinking of doing the Rosetta Stone. If I do this until I graduate, how can I get credit? Do I HAVE to take Spanish through the school, or is there some way I can get credit for taking French through Rosetta Stone? All answers are appreciated and thanks for the help! God bless and Happy New Year!!!

  1. As with anything you MUST follow the rules to "graduate"

That's not really homeschool...  That's ALTERNATIVE school!

So you get a CD and text book for French and do it on your own and F the homeschool program and do the SPANISH just to get your darn degree

    It's required.

Hey, if you were in brick school you'd HAVE to finish 12 th grade to graduate.  It's required.

If you're 16 or 17 and finished ALL your credits and AP courses you'd have to STAY in brick school and do STUDY HALL all day long to get your darn diploma

    The rules is the rules

    Homeschool has no rules

Brick, virtual and alternative schools have rules!

The rules is the rules and there's no getting around it so do the darn SPANISH!

If that's ALL standing between you and an ACCREDITED diploma DO THE DARN SPANISH!

A friend of mine in college who taught puppetry did her thesis with drawings to the edge and THEY DIDN'T LIKE IT

    I told her.

Do the 1" margins.  Put the drawings on discrete pages

Do what is required to get your DARN MS

Take the book you wrote and send it to Harper and Row and get it published as a text book and use it in your college courses!

    SNEER at the school

but get your DARN MS degree!

Do what they ask to get it!

  2. I do Rosetta Stone Spanish.  They also have TONS of other languages to choose from. The way I have to do it with my independant study  program is 65hrs=one half credit (half a year)

I have to get 4 half credits (or 2 whole credits) in Spanish (or the language of my choice) to graduate.  I think that's how they do it most places.

God bless and a Happy New Year to you too!!!!

  3. Most generally, an accredited program will not accept transfer credits unless it is from another accredited program. And, most generally speaking, most accredited programs will not allow you to enroll alacarte and maintain an accredited status. Meaning, you may be able to enroll in one class from an accredited program, but it will be a non accredited credit (if that makes sense)

Curriculum is not accredited, only places, so Rosetta Stone, while a top notch language program, will not carry an accredited status and probably would not transfer toyour program.

Solution: go ahead and take the Spanish, since it is a requirement, then take French on the side. You can still list it in a college app, but it wouldn't show up on your transcript. The fact that you were willing to study a foreign language without credit, will only do you good, not harm. :)

  4. You should contact someone working for your school. They should have alternative courses if the only course they offer is spanish and you have to do it. But if they do not you may have to learn spanish, but you can learn french ether after spanish or at the side. Spanish is a very helpful language to know because it is so widely spoken. And if you learn spanish you will be surprised how much easier French will be because they are similar.

  5. You need to talk/chat with someone from the virtual school to find out if they will take work from Rosetta Stone as credit toward the language requirement.  Probably not because Rosetta Stone is conversation-based; very little written work involved, but you can always ask. Maybe there is a private tutor in your area who could work with you toward credit -- again, you still have to get permission from the virtual school in order to get that credit.

    Good luck!

    :o)

  6. You have to talk to the school!! They are the ones who decide what they will count for credit. We could suggest a million things to you, but they will only mean something if the school has them on their list of what's acceptable.

  7. Rosetta Stone is not accredited -unless something changed recently- but it's supposed to do a really good job of preparing you to take the SAT in that language. Ask your school if that counts.

  8. Regular homeschoolers can really just take what they want of course, but if you are going through a specific program in order to get a degree from that institution, then of course you will have to take their required courses.

You would have to speak to someone such as an advisor or teacher from the program to see if you can substitute courses, and what your options are. Whether or not they will let you will depend on how flexible the program is.

  9. You could see if they will take transfer credits from another program, there are many correspondence and virtual schools that do have French (some even use Rosetta Stone, along with additional bookwork), also there are community college classes.

You could just take Spanish, and study French on the side.

Also, you don't have to go through an accredited school at all.  Plenty of homeschoolers study on their own at home, make their own transcripts, and get into college without a hitch.
