I live in Arizona and I really want to be a foreign exchange student in France.

I was wanting to go my Junior year of high school and I was wondering

What is your experience either being an exchange student or a hosting family?

How much does it cost on average for a year of school abroad?

What are some scholarships available?

  1. Hi!

I've been a host for 13 years now, plus an organization representative. I truly love it! It's been a wonderful experience not only opening up our home to these kids, but going overseas and meeting their families too!

Your junior year IS the best time to go. Hopefully that's not NEXT year as you will be definitely pushing application deadlines!

The first step is to find a program. Make sure it is CSIET listed (www.csiet.org). Also check with your school counselor. A program is only as good as its local representatives. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU are reputable everywhere. Rotary is the cheapest, but most competitive.

Prices will range from plane ticket/passport with Rotary up to around $7,000 - $9,000 with other programs, depending upon length of stay and country you go to. Scholarships are available, but you need to begin applying at the end of the first semester of school (i.e. Nov./Dec.). That will vary with each individual program. You can also check with local organizations for small sponsorships. That can really grow!

    Good luck!

  2. im_kyle_f@hotmail.com ----- see if you can get a hold of this person on MSN, he is my friend (Kyle Felker is his name) tell him that Jake Hammerberg told you to talk to him. He is in Spain right now for a year as a foreign exchange student. He is a junior right now. He is really nice and im sure if he isnt busy he'll tell you everything he knows about it and how the experience has been so far.

He'll give you good info if you want to try and contact him, if not no biggie, good luck
